Frank's highly acclaimed 12 track album “Slipstream” played on acoustic guitar (Irish celtic guitar music at its best) in an “Irish Flatpicking” style, is also available for purchase at this site. Below is a small sample of “Lord MacDonalds” taken from the album.
To visit Lough Key, in the west of Ireland (near Boyle, Co Roscommon) is to experience
a visual and historical feast. A feast that has now become a musical one, with the world's
first recording of a new arrangement of Una Bhan.
The
Legend of Una Bhan depicts the tragic love story of Una McDermot and Thomas Costello.
The musical lament (Una Bhan) has been arranged and recorded for acoustic guitar and
traditional Irish instruments. This is Irish guitar, Celtic guitar, music at its best. The piece starts out as a solo guitar rendition, eventually being joined by some delicate interplay from the harp, culminating in a heart-rending climax of guitar and traditional instruments, reminiscent of the Chieftains.
Of course if your heart strings are in need of recovery after this experience you can always
treat them to Frank Simon's other guitar CD, “Slipstream” - a fiery mixture of flatpicked reels and jigs on acoustic guitar.
Una Bhan is part of a double-A single, along with his own composition “The Isles Of Lough Key” from which the CD takes its title.
Below is a review of Slipstream CD written by
Journalist and Writer Art Edelstein see links
"Simon lives in Boyle which is near Keadue in Co. Roscommon, where Turlough O Carolan
spent his youth and is buried. This is Irish music flatpicked. Simon plays in standard
tuning. There are few albums of Irish music on flatpick guitar, so this stands out. Only
Arty McGlynn and Dick Gaughan have produced flatpick instrumental albums, I know of.
Simon recorded this CD using an Ovation acoustic.......Art Edelstein."
